Knee arthroscopy in Saarland
Not every painful knee needs surgery. At our practice in Illingen, we investigate the cause of your symptoms and when arthroscopy may be appropriate.
What is knee arthroscopy?
During arthroscopy, a camera and instruments are introduced into the knee through small incisions. Depending on the findings, certain problems inside the joint can be treated. Small incisions do not replace a careful assessment of whether surgery is indicated.
Which symptoms are assessed?
Pain, swelling, instability or locking may have different causes. We examine the knee and discuss how the symptoms developed. Existing MRI images and medical reports help with the assessment but are always considered alongside your symptoms.
Meniscus, cruciate ligament or osteoarthritis?
Arthroscopy may form part of meniscal treatment or cruciate ligament reconstruction. In isolated knee osteoarthritis, however, joint lavage and cartilage smoothing have no proven benefit. For osteoarthritis, we discuss other options suited to your findings.
What happens after the procedure?
Activity and physiotherapy depend on the operation. Instructions after meniscal repair may differ from those after partial removal. Possible risks include infection, bleeding and thrombosis. Small skin incisions do not mean the knee can immediately bear full loads again.
Frequently asked questions
Is an MRI finding enough to make the decision?
No. The images must be consistent with your symptoms and physical examination.
Does arthroscopy cure osteoarthritis?
No. Arthroscopy does not restore worn joint cartilage.
